The Camera Lens Technique
Descriptive writingImagine your reader is looking through a camera. You decide what they see, in what order, and how close they get. Fill in each shot to build your plan.
1. Wide shot
AO5The whole setting. Where are we, and what is the overall atmosphere?
2. Medium shot
AO5One important object or person in the scene.
3. Close-up
AO5A small detail on that object or person.
4. Extreme close-up
AO5A tiny sensory detail — texture, sound, smell or taste.
5. Movement
AO5Move the reader's attention somewhere new.
6. Pull back
AO5Return to the wider scene, changed by what we've seen.
Complete at least four shots and your plan will appear here.
Build a Story
Narrative writingGCSE narrative writing does not need an enormous plot. One small event, controlled well, scores higher than three chapters of rushed action.
